Since its inception in late 2006, Hypercolour has grown to become one of the most respected labels in the underground, with a reputation for diversity and forward-thinking grooves.

Tomorrow night in the capital, Hypercolour head Honcho’s Alex Jones and Jamie Russell will be joined by Polands finest exports since the fine lady in my local shop- Mothership’s Catz N Dogz.

If that’s not enough, Ryan Hope & Ste Roberts from Pete’s 50th fame will also be on the bill ahead of their collaborative new project, Glass Table with Alex and Jamie.

The first release comes from Jimmy Edgar who has put together some cool low-tempo, synth heavy, sexy future disco tracks. Detroit’s newest prodigy Kyle Hall has been roped in on remix duties.

The second release is collaboration between none other than tomorrow’s headliners Catz n Dogz & Soul Clap. With a Soulphiction rmx on the cards, the labels intentions are there for all to see, echoed by Jamie himself;

“The music on the label will reflect the weird sounds we’ve be listening to whilst sat around the table! The label consists of myself, Alex Jones, Ste Roberts and Ryan Hope. Ryan runs a film company and with that in mind there will be a wider emphasis on the media side of things, with some hopefully cool music videos, collectable artwork, and more.”

Upstairs is hosted by the Leeds crew Mono_Cult, who if you’ve not been to one of their events in the last few years, where have you been?? I’d recommend their 3rd birthday at their new home “Wire” on call lane with Move D and DJ W!LD on the 12th March.

All this under one roof for one night only, collectively, representing all that is fresh and new in the UK at the minute; chuck in a couple of poles to the mix and an aftreparty close by…I’d get there before 11.

Some may argue that Disco never went away but as we approach the dawn of a new decade, The Revenge hits Manchester to show why it is so vital.

2009 has well and truly been the year of The Revenge. The unassuming Glaswegian has been the lord of all he has surveyed, not putting a foot wrong in becoming the name to check. Be it the incredible series of podcasts emanating from his ooft blog to tightly programmed DJ sets that are equal parts smiles and surprises, he has risen to the highest prominence in little over twelve months. Mixing classic house with deep techno and his own inimitable disco edits, the man is a master of melting floors into an emotional wreck. For proof just check his latest mix in honour of Friday’s appearance with Todd Terje at Plastic People. Stepping toe to toe with this game plan has been Arthouse, who have taken it upon them selves in the last year of the decade to slow things down, sex things up and bring some of the most adventurous guests to Manchester in the shape of Lee Curtiss, Wolf + Lamb and Matt Tolfrey.

The Revenge has risen from cult stardom with the acclaimed Jisco imprint, spreading his reputation most pivotally to Berlin, where Steve Bug has snapped him up to play a key role in Dessous’ 2010 onslaught. It was his remix of Chamboché’s Feverish that tipped the scales and began to turn heads when it appeared on the German’s essential mix this summer. Before long the anthem was topping the Juno charts and cropping up in sets and charts worldwide. Since then the Scotsman’s feet have hardly touched the ground, with his services lauded from New York to Japan to the Snowbombing festival in the coming months. If we look back at the 2009 as the year that DJs began to rediscover their art with percussive tools, bouncing basslines and vocals that tug on your heartstrings then Saki Bar will be the perfect place to see this in full effect. As cold minimalism has given way to a new surge of creativity, as championed by the Arthouse bookings, the juxtaposition of dusty classics and raw, just finished jams has lead to the most memorable and moving dance floor moments since their April launch night at Joshua Brookes.

When The Revenge’s mother label Jisco suddenly folded this year many disco heads were left scratching their heads. From its ashes rose Under The Shade. The man chosen with kicking off the more stripped down, house angled imprint was Chamboché. Riding high in the Juno charts above the likes of Deadmau5 with both his and the label’s inaugural release made the summer for the young Welshman. His melodic take on disco and house has seen him become a fixture at Nottingham’s Stealth club and his work in the studio paid off big time with UTS came calling. With a run of white hot productions to be launched on the vinyl only imprint, this is a producer already endorsed by Mark E, Gerd Jansen and The Riotous Rockers.

Also in support will be residents William James Park and Moid. William’s knowledge of house music knows no limits and his ability to stitch an energetic set together is second to none. Expect jacking rhythms, sexy bass lines and freaky lyrics aplenty. Moid’s deep, deep vibes will be setting the initial pace to transform a sluggish Sunday afternoon into party mode. The Socio Rehab resident is adept at building a vibe to usher people onto the floor with sensual percussion and deep washes of melody.

The unique, musically knowledgeable crowd that circulates around Arthouse is growing rapidly. With many making the regular trip to the stripped back Saki Bar from around the North and Midlands as a matter of course, a community has built up around it. With this event falling so close to Xmas, look out for some cheeky edits already making their way onto the decks ; )

The warehouse party is a tried and tested concept. Nottingham’s stale party scene has needed an shot in the arm for a long while and on Saturday’s evidence this could be it. Combining stripped back decor and a well thought out lay out, The Wherehouse? creates an open, friendly and inclusive vibe. Just as the club circuit in the UK has taken influence from the past in using derelict spaces, most notably in Manchester, so has the music chosen to conduct Saturday’s proceedings. Energetic and full of bounce, house music has made a real comeback from being all but down out a couple years ago after being subsumed by clicks, pops and bleeps. The energy levels rose throughout the night, with each DJ playing his part to help build a great vibe that lasted until the party ended. At around three in the morning, with the arrival of Matt Tolfrey, the sound system woofing and everyone jumping, the venue really came alive. This peaked the party, the moment everyone was waiting for. Unfortunately due to licensing wrangles things had to be cut short just when things were really hotting up.

The party itself had drawn people from all around the Midlands and North, becoming a word of mouth success. Even the freezing portaloos in the car park gave it a festival type feel. Along with all the hard work that had gone into transforming the space, the Zuker Glider boys were on hand to supply their trademark visual mastery. With a large panel on the wall opposite the oversized booth, their dark images writhed and squeezed in perfect sync to the music. Starting with a walk through disco and light house, the b lines started rolling around midnight. Taking over from Moid, whose smooth grooves had got the floor moving, Nick Lawson crafted out an excellent set. Experience at his own Busta Groove* night at Berlin’s Dice club has certainly taught him a thing or two. Smashing out a tough and pacey set that featured the likes of DJ Ali’s You Dont Know, he set the stage for Shrink Records boss Romulus Schwarz to dive in with some crowd pleasing action to set things off.

Joint headliner Inxec never disappoints. Whether its a main room or back room set, at any time to whatever audience, the man is programmed to make people dance. Experiences at the legendary Bomb and Renaissance have molded him into one of the most exciting DJs around. With an arsenal of select edits ready to come storming out of his laptop, including MJ Cole and Per Eckbo Orchestra, his set was driving and textured, full of quirks and with a techy feel. In contrast, when Matt Tolfrey arrived he went straight for the soul. Dropping massive live bass slaps with plenty of vocals his set was uplifting, fun and full of bounce. Harrison’s edit of Lil Louis and the World’s Club Lonely again did the damage, as did Brett Johnson’s Temptation and Lies. Finishing with the Hall and Oates edit that appeared on Will Saul’s epic Fact mix was a timeless ode to the night and sent everyone out into the freezing world outside a little more positive about the possibilities of partying in Nottingham.

Date / Friday, 30 October 2009
Time / 11pm – 4am
Venue / Charlies/ 1 Harter Street, Manchester
Cost / £5

Manchester is a thriving musical community at the moment, the fact we’re not re-visiting the Meandyou collective for their Smallville party with Lawrence & Julius Steinhoff on the same evening speaks volumes for the choice in the city at the moment.

Following last month’s disco bonanza with Daniel Wang, the Naive Melody crew have pulled another cracker out the hat as they welcome Irish man John Daly for his Manchester debut at Charlie’s.

John Daly’s long player ‘Sea and Sky’ has not left my car’s CD player this year, so much in fact that road rage is a thing of the past for me. I can’t think of a mix of done recently that has not featured at least one track of his, ‘This is a Lonely Beat’ on Drumpoet Community probably my pick of his work.

Making a name for himself in recent years on Francois K’s legendary ‘Wave’ imprint, his dubbed out grooves for IRR, Plak and his own label, ‘Feel Music’ have assured his sleek productions are in most DJ’s record boxes at the moment.

No stranger to the scene for the best of 13 years, with appearances at Panorama Bar in Berlin to Cielo in New York, his disco roots should stand him in good stead to follow in Daniel Wang’s footsteps.

John will be joined by residents, who in turn, have a fantastic mix doing the rounds at the moment courtesy of Polaroid in Leeds dapper podcast. Check it.

1. Twisted Wires – One night at the raw deal
3. Jarvis Cocker – Discosong (Pilooski mix)
4. Canyons – Fire eyes (Jacques Renault living in the jungle mix)

Date ::	Friday, 23 October 2009
Time ::	10pm – 6am
Venue :: Stealth, Masonic Place, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham, UK. NG1 5JT
Cost ::	£10

Line-up ::
James Holden
Fairmont
Lukid
LONE
SPAM CHOP
HIZATRON
TAYLOR
METAPHI
CHAMBOCHE
BIZMARC
WINDOWS 78

This is the biggest and most forward thinking event to hit Nottingham for well over a year now, possibly two. Wigflex have pulled out all the stops, made some more stops and pulled them out too for good measure. With 12 acts on the bill, its not only the headliners that deserve props, even read from the bottom you’re gonna find artists with releases on some of the most exciting labels in dance at the moment.

With programming that will wander from Chamboche’s disco grooves, through Bizmarc’s chairobic take on the UK funky sound, Taylor’s reduced tech house, you’re in for a treat before you’ve even seen the headliners. Thats even a prelude to the warped sounds of Lone and Spamchop mashing his way through his inimitable dub/techno hybrid.

Headliner Holden really needs no introduction. Head of the agenda setting Border Community imprint that turned up the likes of Nathan Fake, he’s been at the top of the DJ pile for nearly a decade, having become the darling of the nascent prog scene of the early 00s while only just out of his teens. Since then he’s released several jaw dropping compilations, a critically acclaimed album and been privy to several massive hits on his own label. Holden’s sound has always been hugely influential to the Wigflex crew and this will be a land mark gig for Spamchop and co, as if the occasion wasn’t big enough!

Fairmont’s own Coloured In Memory album continued the trend set by Holden and Fake, with highly textured soundscapes married to dancefloor dynamics, making it one of 2007’s standouts. Another producer who limits his output, Fairmont touched many hearts with his 06 anthem Gazebo, which was cained by the likes of John Digweed and Luciano. Expect a massive crowd reaction if he decides to unleash that beast.

Actress is a producer who stradles dub, dupstep, house and the UK funky sound. His set at Futureproof last year combined brash garage basslines with percussive elements and dubby wobblers, expect more of the same as this man’s stock continues to rise.

This is a massive event with DJs who will be driving Stealth’s funktion one soundsystem to it’s very limits, from disco to dubstep to house and electro, this will be a celebration of all forms of cutting edge dance music and should not be missed!

Drawing early influence from Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hiphop and House before a transition to disco and Detroit/Chicago 90`s house that he is now more commonly known for; he should fit in perfectly to the City-Fly ethos for a Saturday night.

Kris Wadsworth is seemingly brand new to electronic music; however, he has been writing and producing tracks since he was fourteen years old. Raised in and around Detroit, he first heard the sounds of dance music from mix tapes his sibling would bring home from the local nightclubs. From age eleven he was studying blues and rock guitar, painting graffiti, listening to hip hop, jazz, and the dance sounds of Detroit, Chicago and New York. He luckily found electronic music to be his ultimate creative medium. Anyone could have guessed this kid would have been an artist from an early age. Now at age 24, he has numerous internationally acclaimed recordings to his credit and shows no sign of stopping. Kris is in this for the long haul, as it were, and his nostalgic, yet forward-thinking productions ought to spell that out loud and clear.

I took the time to catch up with a good friend of mine, City-Fly’s Jon Iliffe, (the dude who gave me my first shot on the one’s and two’s) to have a chat about this Saturday, reflect on good times past and what’s on the horizon for City-Fly in the new year..

How has the party evolved since it started?

Well, we now have the city fly radio show, the label is set to be launched in the New Year, we’re starting a residency @ 54 in Shoreditch next month and we also have parties lined up in Italy soon. The music policy is pretty much the same though, we’ve always had a passion for the deeper side of underground house and it seems at this present point in time the kind of music we’ve been pushing since day one with city fly is blowing up on the scene which helps and more people are taking notice.

Motor City Drum Ensemble and Kris Wadsworth on the same bill in Leicester; it’s a Line-up one would normally find in London, Leeds or Berlin- having switched venues from London, is it something that your conscious of??

Yes to be honest when we had to pull the event at the last minute i was pooing my pants, but I knew with the quality line up we have and a lot of hard work from myself and the boys we would give it our best shot to make it work in Leicester and things are looking good, the reaction has been better than any other city fly over the past 5 years which is always a good sign so we’re confident it will still be a success.

You’ve always stuck to your guns at City-Fly on your booking policy, combining local talent with a range of Leicester debutants- what’s been your favourite city-fly event over the years?

Ohhh that’s a tuff one… I’d have to say the launch night around 5 years ago @ Weavers. We were all about 20 years old and we booked the Inland Knights, we didn’t have a clue how it was going to turn out, we’d never promoted a night before and we didn’t even have enough money to cover any of the costs if it flopped, but fortunately it went amazing. The place was rammed, the music was ace, we had proven to ourselves we could host a respectable night and our balls were saved as we could afford to pay our DJ’s ha-ha!

What does City Fly have in store for the remainder of the year?

After the MCDE & Wadsworth event in Leicester, we Launch our new bi-monthly night @ 54 in Shoreditch with Lovebirds (OM / Freerange / Winding Road) who will be joining us from Hamburg, Rhythm Plate (Lost My Dog / Winding Road / DIY) who are old City Fly favourites, myself, j shez, ash stevenson & jay l. We will be hosting bi monthly 3rd weekends of the month in London so keep an eye out for future events and forward thinking DJ’s and music from around the globe.

Lee Curtiss winds up another quality Arthouse event.

Installment three of Arthouse’s ascent up the party ladder brought another gathering of folk from around the North and the Midlands. Walking into a room on a Sunday night to the sound of Rainer Truby’s To Know You, typified the open vibe of the party as a packed dance floor dutifully got down to the lush house music. Set in a stripped back venue that comes alive when filled with great music and people, the party was the perfect setting for getting messy, chilling or simply having a care free wobble about the floor.

As mUmU’s Harrison wound up his funk charged set with Rainer Truby, headliner Curtiss took the controls at 9. The mUmU resident’s set was a perfect prelude, chunky, fun and skillfully delivered. By this point the party vibe was such that few people made too much of a fuss at the change of personnel. Allowing the support’s vibe to guide most of the first hour of his set, the Detroit born DJ began to impose his style with his own cuts, including Smoking Mirrors on Spectral Sound. Dropping the energy a little, he concentrated more on letting fat basslines pour over the floor rather than keeping things jacking. Settling into a steady chug and with a great flow, the NY based DJs set began to purr with assurance and class. This was perfect for the crowd, with people making the journey from Sheffield, Clethorpes and Nottingham for the event.

Ramping up the intensity expertly with a few choice percussive numbers to oil up the crowd, Curtiss began to move the set closer to the sound currently favoured by many of the Wolf and Lamb affiliates. Taking things further toward Disco in the second half of his set opened up the vibe sufficiently for tracks like Jamie Jones and Gadi Misrahi’’s mix of Atlantic Conveyor’s Nasty Things to do the damage (Track four of Jones’ awesome Essential Mix). A tough schedule of touring had obviously taken its toll on the producer, who looked a little jaded and lost his way a little towards the end of his set. However a few dodgy selections were easily tempered by classics such as Soul II Soul’s Back to Reality and a re-edit of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill (Which is never lost on the girls in the crowd).

Arthouse is an example of how a well planned party can be executed so as to bring together like minded people from around the country. With a growing following and some exciting bookings imminent, this looks like one Sunday sioree thats here to stay.

Arthouse Presents Lee Curtiss

Date :: Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 4:00pm – 00.00
Location :: Saki Bar, 2 Wilmslow Road, Manchester, United Kingdom

Line Up ::
LEE CURTISS [detroit/spectral sound/wolf+lamb/cityfox]
HARRISON [mUmU]
WILLIAM JAMES PARK [arthouse]
MOID [arthouse]

Our favourite Sunday party returns this weekend, brining with it one of the hottest talents to impact on 2009. An extended stay in the UK has farmed out his talents throughout London, adding in Nottingham and Dublin for good measure. Now concluding his UK excursion, Arthouse’s intimate Sunday shindig will provide the perfect stage for Curtiss to unravel some choice dance floor dynamics in a specially extended set.

The Midwesterner, based in New York, will have four hours to splay his influences across the floor, lay things down and get a little dirty. Known for his edgy, sexual take on rocking a crowd, Arthouse’s discerning patrons will be looking to lap up whatever curve balls he decides to throw. His ability to span generations and genres in one set will be an exciting prospect to behold in a party that threatens to escape into the early hours of Monday morning.

The venue for the debauchery will again be Saki Bar, scene of one of the hottest parties to hit the North this summer, when Wolf + Lamb played into a seemingly endless night, jamming up the Disco, House and Techno. Curtiss will be a different proposition but the aesthetic of the W+L stable of artists will be the same, presenting full flavoured body music that leaves genre boundaries and prejudices at the door, without forgetting to bring a playful air of fun.

In support are mUmU’s Harrison and residents Will Park and Moid. Harrison has supported the likes of Tobi Neumann and Nick Curly recently and brings a wealth of experience to bear on the party to get the crowd oiled up in preparation for the carnage to come later in the night.

Fusing Detroit with Manchester through Lee Curtiss’ talents, ably supported by top residents, in an intimate, no frills venue serves up our pick of the week, check out our review of the last Arthouse for a taste of what to expect.

Soul Clap splash down in Leeds for a Sunday waltz.

Date :: Sunday, 4 October 2009
Time :: 19:00 – late
Venue :: Revolution
Cost :: Free

At Micawber we’re all up for stretching the pennies with some Sunday afternoon free party action. With a host of top DJs unloaded on the North this weekend, including Steve Bug, Jamie Jones, Carl Craig, The Revenge and Rolando, our pick is the intimate party, headed up by the white hot Soul Clap, being thrown by the Death On The Balcony crew. Sunday parties are always the most exciting and musically open minded parties, when people fully drop their inhibitions, united in sticking two fingers up at the working week ahead.

Adopted by Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap’s Edits first appeared on W+L’s Ibiza Voice podcast and set a frenzy of excitement that announced their presence on the global stage. With the success of the Brooklyn label, their status has rocketed, winning influential fans such as Heidi and having ‘Conscious’ turn up in all self respecting DJ’s charts. In the wake of this success they have recently completed a European tour that took in dates in Paris, Zagreb and Berlin’s Club De Visionaere. The freshness in their approach to production allow DJs to bridge the gap between House and Disco records that they would normally have shunned, opening up a world of possibilities that will be explored come Sunday. Down load their latest mix ‘The Great White Hope’ here.
The mix showcase the Bostonian’s open minded approach to partying, where anything goes, as long as its locked into the groove.

We spoke a little with Death On The Balcony’s Paul Hargreaves about the event:

Can you tell us a bit about how the party came about and why you started it?

The name for the party was born out of a studio session. We were working on a track with Ste Roberts for Hypercolour (due around dec 09!;) and had used a sample from the 70’s blue movie Emmanuelle and were also sharing a party bucket of fried chicken at the time and so just fused the two together. It had a ring to it so we went with the name initially for the track and then decided do events with it… Reasons for starting the party are standard really, we want to put on good music for good people , we want to keep our parties as cheap as possible for our clubbers, for example where possible no or low door tax , so emphasis is fully on quality of guest, music and atmosphere!

How are acts like Soul Clap viewed in Leeds? Is this a sound you’ve been pushing in your DD residency? Where does it fit in with the rest of the Leeds scene? DD, Technique, Basics etc??

There is a good following for Soul Clap in Leeds , there is much respect for their output at the moment along with Wolf + Lamb and the like.. Our sound with Death On The Balcony can range anywhere from deep dubby disco through to groove based house and techno, good melody , strong beats. Variation is key in DJ sets to keep a crowd interested. The time and space helps mould your set and guides you towards the sorts of tracks you want to be playing for that environment. For example we would play different records before Moodymann than we would before Ivan Smagghe but we feel there is a thread which links the two together which gives you your “own sound” . This sound will be represented through our productions and showcased through our label, Magicbag Music… So we hope you enjoy it!

The Leeds scene is healthier than its ever been. There’s lots of different nights all booking really strong guests, so all in all, great choice for a clubbing night out if you want to hear electronic music.

What is the venue like and what kind of a crowd are you expecting? Loads of people had traveled hours to see Wolf + Lamb in Manc, will you get the same?

Well we have had a slight problem with our opening party at the original venue. Distrikt has fallen slightly behind schedule so will not be open in time for our first event which is a shame so we had to relocate the launch party to revolution on Call Lane, around the corner which has seen some good guests play there in the past in Jimpster, Serge Santiago, Simon Baker, Tim Sheridan to name but a few. So the show must go on and we are very happy thay we can do it there for the 4th October. We have people traveling over from Manchester and London for this which we are all very pleased about.. exciting!

What have you got in the pipeline for future events?

Sorry cant say yet regarding bookings yet, but expect more of the same! Top bookings, good atmosphere for a fraction of the price!

Which tunes are big in your parties at the moment?

Without the obvious nod to some of Soul Claps recent releases on wolf + lamb and Airdrop! here are some others that float our metaphorical boat Here is a new one and a classic that have been turning heads and working the floor!

1. Makam – When You Love Somebody (Sushitech) 2. Chez Damier – Can You Feel It (MK dub)(KMS)

Micawber's carte blanche mix series continues with an hour of House, Disco and Dub from Ben Start.

Micawber Mix Series :: Ben Start :: Episode Two

Next up in the Micawber.net podcast series is our very own word-smith, Ben Start. Following Matthew Burton’s exquisite rendition of his deepest house cuts and flavors, Ben’s obsession with podcasts has clearly done him no harm, as he’s able to blend what we shout about at Micawber into an hour of house, disco and dub.

Fine tuning his skills at Nottingham club Stealth on a Saturday for over 2 years has enabled Ben to warm up and rock out with quite a selection of DJ’ and artists ranging from Ivan Smagghe to Shackleton, it’s clear his sound is influenced by a broad range of music he’s been exposed to.

Perfect for a Monday, enjoy.
